The Student Food Drive is a six-week hunger relief campaign designed to empower high school students to engage business leaders, community leaders and regional food banks in acts of volunteerism, awareness-building, food collection and fundraising dedicated to fighting hunger in their communities.
Harvesters partners with local public and private high schools who compete to collect the most pounds of food per student. With the help of a faculty adviser, students plan events to promote the drive, organize their food collection, and package and deliver food to the food bank.
Harvesters and sponsors launch the program by hosting a Kick-Off Party at the start of the campaign that incorporates skits from each participating school. This year's kick-off party will be hosted at the Kansas City Wizards game on Saturday, October 24. Students who win "best skit" will have the opportunity to meet Wizards players before the game.
At the end of the six-week period, Harvesters, along with community participants, concludes the event with a Loading Day. The students’ collections are weighed and the winners are recognized based on “pounds-per student collected.” This year, Kansas City Chiefs running back Kolby Smith and the Kolby Cares Foundation will be awarding the top three schools with monetary prizes at the awards ceremony in December.
The Student Food Drive develops student leadership through a series of student-created-and-driven events that center around creativity, entertainment, communications, business practices, purchase negotiations fundraising and social concerns. Students can collect food and money that is used to purchase food through creative events such as raffles, dances, silent auctions, dodge ball tournaments and more.
